About Wasatch Choice
Our Vision & History
The Wasatch Choice 2050 Vision
How we grow matters. The transportation system and how we use the land around it affects our cost of living, time spent commuting that could be spent with friends and family, the air we breathe, how we enjoy our free time, and the neighborliness of the communities in which we live, among many other things.
Beginning with the Envision Utah effort that led to the Quality Growth Strategy in 1999, residents from across the region came together to explore a variety of potential futures and the benefits and disadvantages of each. Through additional workshops and public input, that vision was refined to a more specific vision for the Wasatch Front region. Through this process participants coalesced upon nine Principles for Growth, and a Vision Map, that focused on a few distinct strategies for growth. The Wasatch Choice for 2040 Vision was the result of thousands of voices.
Wasatch Choice 2050 represents the most significant update to the Wasatch Choice for 2040 Vision since Wasatch Front communities first established it over a decade ago.
Building on community values through an extensive public input process, Wasatch Choice established a blueprint for growth that supports a well-functioning economy, improves air quality, and enhances the overall quality of life for Utahns living across the Wasatch Front.
Wasatch Choice 2050 will update the regional vision looking out to 2050. It will better articulate how to make the vision a reality through recommended implementation strategies. It will build on the dynamic changes happening in communities throughout the region, local efforts like Salt Lake County’s The Future We Choose, and the Your Utah, Your Future statewide vision in which nearly 53,000 Utahns participated.
Wasatch Choice 2050 Goals
On Thursday, October 27, the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) adopted the Wasatch Choice 2050 goals.
This milestone represents the culmination of a year and a half of work to gather input from cities, counties, transportation partners, businesses, and community organizations regarding local and regional priorities for the Wasatch Choice 2050 Vision and 2019-2050 Regional Transportation Plan.
Wasatch Front Regional Council established these goals to inform how future transportation investments will be evaluated, selected, and prioritized, and how those projects will be coordinated with local community priorities regarding the use of land and the pursuit of economic development opportunities.
In coordination with its partners, WFRC is currently developing criteria to measure progress toward achieving the goals, as well as three scenarios to show different approaches to future transportation and land use investments. Meetings to gather feedback from local stakeholders will occur in the coming months.
Principles of the Vision
As a result of the Wasatch Choices 2040 process, Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) and Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) adopted the following Growth Principles and Objectives in late 2005. The adoption of the growth principles means that over time our region will make key transportation decisions after considering their impact on long-term quality growth goals and calculations of cost effectiveness. The Preamble below is part of the adopted text of the Growth Principles and provides a more specific overview for how they will be used.
Vision Map & Brochure
The Wasatch Choice 2050 Vision is currently being developed. Information regarding the Wasatch Choice for 2040 Vision follows.
The Greater Wasatch is one region, stretching from Weber County south to Utah County and from Tooele County east to the Wasatch Back. We compete economically with other regions, comprise one job and housing market, and share the same air and water. Where and how we shape tomorrow’s neighborhoods, communities, and economic centers within our region will dramatically affect the quality of our lives, including how much time and money we spend getting around, the quality of the air we breathe, and the choices we have available to live, work, shop, and play.

2016 Consortium Meeting
The Wasatch Choice vision provides a blueprint for how transportation, land use, and economic development can be shaped to improve the quality of life for residents along the Wasatch Front. This year’s Consortium meeting will focus on refreshing the Wasatch Choice vision looking out to 2050 to reflect the dynamic changes in the region, the Your Utah Your Future statewide vision, and local efforts like Salt Lake County’s The Future We Choose. Consortium partners are pleased to announce the event will be combined with Utah’s Active Transportation and Health Summit to highlight the importance of building vibrant communities that promote active living.
